By Apple (Apple Inc.)

Apple Configurator 2 makes it easy to deploy iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple TV devices in your school or business.

Use Apple Configurator 2 to quickly configure large numbers of devices connected to your Mac via USB with the settings, apps, and data you specify for your students, employees, or customers.

Rebuilt from the ground up, Apple Configurator 2 features a flexible, device-centric design that enables you to configure one or dozens of devices quickly and easily. Simply select a single device or many at once and perform an action. With Apple Configurator 2, you're able to update software, install apps and configuration profiles, rename and change wallpaper on devices, export device information and documents, and much more. You can also inspect any device to see details like serial number and hardware addresses, which apps and profiles are installed, and its console log.

Apple Configurator 2 integrates with the Device Enrollment Program to automate MDM enrollment as well as the Volume Purchase Program to seamlessly distribute apps from the App Store. The all-new Prepare assistant makes it easy to supervise and configure a cart of iPads for the classroom or quickly enroll a large number of devices in your MDM server for ongoing management. The built-in configuration profile editor supports creating and editing profiles with the latest iOS settings.

If you’re configuring devices in an environment where consistency is critical, Blueprints allow you to create a custom configuration for your devices that can be applied with one click. A Blueprint is a template device to which you add configuration profiles and apps and perform actions, just like you would to a connected physical device.

Fully automate Apple Configurator 2 and integrate its capabilities into your existing device management workflows using the included command-line tool, AppleScript scripting library, or Automator Actions.

Support for iCloud Drive enables you to keep your configuration profiles and other settings consistent across multiple Configurator stations.

Comments and Ratings for Apple Configurator 2

Works great! (2.4)

Apple Configurator 2 works fantastic. You can manage multiple devices at once. You can bypass the activation lock as well. Great and free :)

MDMs and DEP are slowly replacing AC2, but I still enjoy AC2 (2.3)

It makes iOS management easier. MDMs and DEP are slowly replacing AC2, but I still enjoy using Apple Configurator 2 as a local-only option. Great for iPad carts.

cfgutil missing upgrade-app command (2.3)

5 stars if Apple adds “upgrade-app” or similar command so you don’t have to uninstall an application and then install which loses the apps data.

Disastrous Update (2.3)

I had hoped that AC2 would improve on its predecessor. It did not. I manage almost 400 iPads, both version 2 & Air. This new Configurator has made my task exponentially more convoluted and difficult. I may roll my MacBook Pro’s back to El Capitan and see if I can reinstall AC1. Good grief, Apple!!

Works perfectly for me (2.3)

I used the software the build a policy for my AppleTV to use WPA/WPA2 Enterprise authentication. Now, the fact that AppleTV doesnt’ support Enterprise authenticaiton is another issue entirely. But the configurator tool work perfectly! I don’t understand the negitive reviews except perhaps its being reviewed by people who didn’t understand waht the tool was used for. This is not really an end-user tool, it is clearly aimed at the enterprise…99% of home users would never need this software.

Way to mess up a good thing (2.3)

I used the previous version to setup 1500 ipads for our organization and it worked great. Wifi profiles applied easily and automated enrollment into the MDM was very easy. Now (as Apple seems to do with most updates) the latest version breaks some very useful features. My wifi profiles no longer work. I verified that it is due to the new version as they still worked on my Mac that had the old version. (Enrollment stopped working on the old version and will only work on the latest version after I manually add the Device Registration WIFI network) Apple in their infinite genius decide to add extra settings to the profile settings and failed to mention that we would need these settings in order to connect to our work WIFI. There is absolutely no documentation I can find regarding the new settings but they are there and they are the only thing that changed in regards to the Profile setup. This has made configuring Ipads a nightmare, considering I have another 1000 to configure and will have to manually input the WIFI password on every unit. This issue has been ongoing for weeks now and their has been no updates to address the issue or any help form Apple at all when the issue has been brought up.

Disasterous (2.3)

The new version is not helpful at all. First the interface is very confusing to use. Now with iOS 10 we have to activate new devices before we can pre-configure them? This is not helpful and defeats the purpose of pre-configuration. We now have to inconvience our user base even more with an extended hold up to configure the device in addition to activation delays. What I would like to see is a utility that is easy to use that can activate a phone without deactivating the old one (I realize there is work to be done with the carriers to allow for this) and get past security hold-ups including passcode/Touch ID & Find My iPhone. Our biggest hold up in delays is not configuration issues rather it is the Find My iPhone activation lock. If there is a way to get past that it would be amazing.

Version 2.3 Restore Failing (2.3)
9/26/2016 4:47:00 PM 2/5 By SupportTechnician
Rant alert. AC2 is REALLY nice, but consistency between versions is increasingly frustrating. We use AC2 in our organization to update/restore iPads right out of the box. The previous version of AC2 was working and iOS 9.3.4 was installing fine, no errors. Star to Apple! This is a vast difference in performance from the first version of AC2, which our Apple reps insisted the problem was our WiFi……though AC2 is a wired connection. At any rate, we recently updated AC2 (iOS 10.x also came out) and restoring fails often. The problem is not WiFi, nor is it our hub, as again, it worked in the previous version of AC2. As a compliment, I do appreciate that this version supports adding a supervision identity certificate from our MDM, so now both the AC2 stations and MDM can work together. Star to Apple! Summary: AC2 restore fails often (most important feature for us in AC2) MDM synchronization is really nice (however this feature is so belated we’ve learned to work around it, though that belatedness may be due to our MDM provider) For Apple, who will probably never read this: I like the idea of blueprints but I believe there’s an issue with the way blueprints are applied. For example, we want the blueprint to restore all devices, then name them (we have a set naming scheme, e.g. smith-1, smith-2), THEN apply an MDM enrollment profile. This does work; however, iPads sometimes go into the MDM named “iPad” and some go in named how we want them to. The advantage of naming them before enrollment is to avoid having thousands of devices all named iPad. I propose that a delay is added in the blueprint when a naming scheme is invoked. This would allow time for AC2, or possibly the Hub that all the iPads are plugged into, to catch up BEFORE the enrollment profile is installed. Test this with 10+ iPads instead of one, you will see what I mean. Really, a cure all would be for Apple to go ahead and become an MDM. Apple has everything they need in their arsenal to be an MDM (especially with the addition of Apple School Manager), but still Apple chooses to push the responsibility to a 3rd party. Clearly I don’t know everything as I’m not one of the most profitable companies in the world, but it seems like Apple wants to micro-manage their software but not accept the responsibility of deploying it.

Where did Apple’s INTUITIVE go? (2.3)

I downloaded this thinking it would be useful with the assorted IOS devices in my household. Hit a brick wall immediately --- searched "Help" for adding devices There are two ways to add a device -- automatically by pointing the device to some 3-letter server -- and manually prep. Unfortunately, the "How-to" for both methods is missing or or well hidden. The resulting "Oh well" led me to uninstall it.
