Comments and Ratings for Day One

It’s Great!! (2.2.2)

Awesome application...

Great (2.2.2)

With constant improvements to the application and an already functional, aesthetically pleasing one, this Day One is a must have for me. The reason I’m giving it four stars however, is because it’s quite pricey. For only less than $10 on iOS the desktop application is fairly expensive for something that doesn’t offer any more features than the mobile application.

I love it. (2.2.2)

I've been using DayOne on my iPhone for several months and liked it. So I decided to get it on my laptop, even though it is a little pricey, but I have to say I am loving it. There are a few things that are little confusing, but once I got over the initial hurdle, it's a breeze to use. The sync is great. No problems, no crashes. I recommend it.

Love it, BUT (2.2.2)

Make it so each journal can have it’s own password! I’ve been waiting for this option for about 1-2 years now! Everything else is great! Thank you!

Awesome with encryption (2.2.2)

Well well, the first release had a little problem but the customer service is great and the problem has been remedied. Awesome app from an awesome company.

Imagination Good, Execution Pitiful (2.2.1)
6/16/2017 6:09:28 PM 1/5 By EliotJ2
This app has a lot of good features––in theory. However, the developers seem determined to make it way more difficult than it needs to be. When I first downloaded it, I had these crazy, inexplicable syncing issues. Took a night, but figured it out. Now, just the other day with a new update, the ability to bulk edit just went bye-bye, again for no good reason. One day, Command + A, Shift + Down Arrow, Command + Delete would select all, highlight sequentially, and delete. The next day, none work How did support seek to address the problem with a keyboard shortcut on my desktop? By inquiring about what version of Day One I have on my iPhone. I'm not a tech genius, but I know of no possible way that an app on my iPhone would suddenly and without apparent reason stop me from being able to use keyboard shortcuts on my Mac. Either way, it's just a classic case of great imagination running far ahead of solid execution and falling flat. Ditch the hubris, make what you have work like a dream, then add all the bells and whistles. Otherwise it's just a bejeweled piece of garbage. And as soon as the original shine comes off (which is of couse, after the developers have pocketed my money for their subpar product), it's a big stinking pile.

If a private notebook is your goal, keep looking. (2.2.1)

Beautiful app, but the password protection feature is superficial. Password protection feature does not actually protect your data nor provide a road block to deter anyone else that is able to view files on your system— which is precisely the reason that a password protected feature would exist in the first place. Makes you wonder if they got any of the encryption right, but I wouldn’t bother to check until this piece is fixed. See for yourself - Close application. Create entry with some text text to search for (I used "canary token foo”) Open terminal and search for your token on the file system: (replace canary with enough of your token to verify) $ strings ˜/Library/Group\ Containers/*.dayoneapp2/Data/Documents/DayOne.sqlite-wal | grep canary GUIDGUID-GUID-GUID-GUID-GUIDGUIDGUIDcanary token fooGUIDGUIDGUIDGUIDGUIDGUIDGUIDGUIDbplist00 Most likely the temporary files used while the applicatoin is open are not securely erased either. Perhaps in the next go!

Big steps backwards from previous version (2.2.1)

I was a very happy user of Day One Classic, and decided to take a chance and upgrade to version 2. In addition to the cost and lack of control over your data (via Dropbox or other external sync services), this app is very slow and choppy on my 2015 MacBook Pro. I’m back to using Day One Classic and feel like I wasted money on this new app.

So worthy (2.2.1)

I use this so much. And it was never a huge deal for me but now they’ve even implemented the encryption everyone’s been asking about. I am constantly adding life events to this to refer back to. For someone like me who doesn't like to put all their stuff out in public (looking at you, Facebook) this gives me everything I need to keep track of everything. I also get alerts for “On this day” and I love that… Just to give an example of how I use this: I am someone who goes to tons of live concerts and shows. I like to have a record of all the shows I’ve been to and also a snapshot of the ticket. I add each concert I’ve attended to this journal, add the location where it was, tag it with “Concert” so I can narrow down all my concerts when searching, add a photo of the event (which inputs date, time, and location automatically if you want), and also a snapshot of my ticket. It’s really great and easy to do and I can't ever imagine doing this any other way now. DayOne has changed the way I record events and keep track of things. AND it integrates with Workflow for iOS too so let that sink in for potential. Now imagine this scenario for anything else you want to keep track of or input into this. It really streamlines the journaling process for you so you can focus on just writing and getting your ideas out and into record. I plan to someday get sections of my journal bound into book (yes another feature available to you directly in the app!) Keep up the good work, DayOne!

Don’t Turn On End-to-End Encryption Yet! (2.2.1)
6/15/2017 10:36:38 AM 3/5 By HuaTham
If you use note links heavily to connect notes inside Day One, you may find that those links become totally broken after toggling on End-to-End Encryption. Note IDs have apparently been re-calculated for ALL the notes after turning the feature on. If you have backups, you can safely fall back. Otherwise, you may regret turning this feature on as of now. I have contacted the Dev about this and we will see if / how they can fix it. I will update my review once this issue is resolved.
