Comments and Ratings for GarageBand

Please stop (10.2)

Nobody uses the Touchbar!!! It was a lazy idea

Update no help (10.2)
6/7/2017 9:54:34 PM 1/5 By resetpreacher
I can't get Garageband 10 to record two inputs from my 2i2 Focusrite attached to 2012 MacBook Pro using Sierra. The sound is obviously getting to the interface. I set inputs to 1 on a mike and 2 on another mike for recording voice and guitar. I’ve enabled record in both however one will not stay on, no matter what I do. I’ve watched videos, checked blogs and forums — tried everything suggested, to no avail. I give up! Update 10.2 says it addressed ease of use but it appears no different on this issue. I switched to GarageBand from the Ableton Light DAW that came with the interface because I found that program too hard to learn. I’ve wasted a lot of time on this. Guess I have no choice but to go back to it because I don’t have money for another DAW.

New Update (10.2)
6/7/2017 4:51:54 PM 2/5 By TheNoahFrosh
Before the new update, I would’ve given Garageband 5 stars. However, the new update made the graphics look very childish and plain. Garageband would have been better off without this update.

Redesign is a disaster (10.2)
6/6/2017 8:52:46 PM 1/5 By MikeBeas
The new design is sterile and uninspired. It needlessly changes icons around, moves some controls. Yet another terrible software update from Apple. This is becoming the norm. Stay on 10.1 if you’ve got it.

A great app! (10.2)
6/6/2017 4:36:21 PM 4/5 By French toast and butter.
I’ve been using GarageBand for years and I love it! It’s super easy to use, and all of the essentials are easily accessible. Lots of third party plugins also work very nicely. One thing I wish could improved is the flex timing feature. The quality really isn’t that good after audio is stretched a lot. I know that this is done on purpose so that there is no lag or rendering time, but if there were a checkbox in the preferences panel that allowed for higher quality stretching upon export, then that would be perfect because I use that feature a lot when making remixes. Overall, I really love GarageBand!

Greater than before! (10.2)

Easier to navigate, if that was possible!

Remeber to save session to external drive (10.1.6)
6/1/2017 8:30:05 PM 5/5 By Music Factory Studios
I keep reading in the comments about the disk to slow error. All recording sessions need to be saved to an external drive and tracks played back from the external drive no matter if you use Garageband or Logic X or Pro Tools, if you are getting an error from a slow disk it’s because you are not proplerly saving the files ecternally outside of the OS drive. Latency will be lower and you can record more tracks along with using more plugins & effects. You should always save sessions to an external drive so your internal drive can take care of the operating system and all other tasks like plugins and effects. Using an External USB3 or Thunderbolt drive will help to not overload the bottle neck of the system which is your internal drive. This is especially needed if you have a spinning hard drive but even if you have an SSD in your machine try an external drive and watch your system preform 10 times better when recording or mixing audio.

Gets worse and worse with each update. (10.1.6)
6/1/2017 4:00:13 PM 2/5 By Jacques7Chef
As updates becomes more frequent and required with many kinds of software, Garageband suffers the problem of removing features that didn’t need to be removed which let the software stand out much more on its own than with other music editing software. What do I mean by this? Well, take Garageband verison 6.0 which came free if you owned a Macbook back in the earlier years (say 2009). Back then you may have had less instruments to play with, but you had TONS of effects to make those intruments sound cooler which made up for it. It allowed much more creative freedom for the user to play around with. Want an Electric Guitar sound 8bit or 16bit? You could! Want a saxophone reverb like a guitar or echo throughtout the track? You could! Nowadays, the newest versions of Garageband have become less and less interesting because, even though they added more instruments to library, they removed those effect features which now have become their own instruments or instrument loops that has become standard just like any other music editing software. What’s even worse the new Macbook software doesn’t even let you install Garageband 6.0 alongside newer versions anymore and even if you try to (disc or otherwise), it won’t register to complete intrumental set in the newer versions and just simply dump the old software in favor of the newer version instead. Remember those 6 Garageband Jam Packs that are now hard to find these days? Well, if you want them, you’re going to have to pay for a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SOFTWARE just to get them and even then, they still might not be compatible with newer versions! So if I were to sum up points to improve Garageband and make it better to stand out more than its competitiors, here’s what I would do: -Bring back the Garageband Jam Packs and the instrumental effects from the 6.0 version -Bring back the ability to have newer versions of Garageband stand alongside older versions (if not, at least do the first bullt point) -Add MORE instruments to the library. The newest I’ve seen are Chinese Traditional, which is fine, but there’s a WORLD full of instruments out there guys! Think outside the box, please! And sure there are more intruments than older versions had, but adding more intruments would be a bonus in my book compared to removing features that made Garageband stand out from its competitors. -Not every music editing software has to be the same. I’ve been using Garageband more than other music editing software such as Reason and Fruity Loops and I love it for its simple user interface, which is what keeps me using it. However, recently, I’ve been disappointed at the approach the developers are taking with Garageband which is why I rate it 2 stars.

for me its cool (10.1.6)

I am beyond fruaterated with this sytem overload message. I have made 3 call to apple support about this error message and they have not been able to pin point the problem i have top of the line apple and i used to use this program with a very old apple computer and never had a problem. Now top of the line desk top and have errors beyond my nerves using garage band. Thinking about just taking this back

great but... (10.1.6)
5/18/2017 3:48:57 PM 4/5 By RIP 2006-2016
It is great to get started making decent music… but I wish I could have a bit more advanced features. Or maybe something that is in the middle of garageband and logic that cost around 60 to 100 bucks.

so frustrating, unreliable app (10.1.6)
5/16/2017 2:04:18 PM 1/5 By some dude, hey
i have been using garageband for years. it used to be better but now is very glitchy. i have a new computer and am running nothing else but i still constantly get lag, freezing, errant noises, program malfunctions, and other issues…it seems like a new problem each day. i honestly believe apple just wants you to buy logic so they are keeping the app really buggy so you can’t get any work done

Won’t install new sounds (10.1.6)
5/14/2017 11:02:48 AM 3/5 By TheCony
I am having the issue of not being able to install the new sounds on my MacBook Pro. I’ve googled every solution I could find and nothing is seeming to work. Any pointers on how to fix this issue? I really want to enjoy making my music.

No 4 or older (10.1.6)
5/12/2017 8:05:21 AM 5/5 By 5 year old reviews
I’m 5 and i can’t use this app because its very complicated I think they should change the age limit to 20 because if i can’t even use it and i’m 5 then how do you expect a 4 year old to use it. apple needs to fix it. I’m Finna Burst

New Update is treacherous. Waste of $5. (10.1.6)
5/11/2017 9:43:50 AM 1/5 By Hdjaoqobrbbud
I’ve used Garageband extensively since 2008 and spent hundreds on hundreds of hours making songs and I’ve archived all these songs. Now that I’ve spent $5 for the new version, all my work is basically unacessable: the instruments are missing or sound completely different, the instrument effects panel seems NON-EXISTANT and I’ve looked everywhere for it, the whole interface seems very limited now and works more like an instant-satisfaction, music-making game. Now I’m going through the process of trying to find a legacy version of GarageBand from say 2014 if I’m going to use garageband at all. It’s pretty frustrating I havent had access to my old songs in over a year since my last laptop broke. Don’t purchase this app if you are used to the old garageband.

Can’t install :( (10.1.6)
5/8/2017 4:22:03 PM 1/5 By RACHSTEIER
I’ve tried three times and I can’t install GarageBand on my MacBook Pro. Is something wrong with this version??

Distorted Noises From Overprocessing (10.1.6)
5/5/2017 3:12:36 PM 3/5 By Justin Turek
GarageBand is historically a great app; however, I’ve been experiencing a strange issue that almost makes it unusable (I’m guessing since Sierra). Quite often, the app just starts crackling and popping during playback. I’ve noticed this typically happens when there’s a lot of activity on my Mac (either manually from myself cycling through/launching multiple apps or just the processor gone crazy). It even happens when only GarageBand is running and with a small number of tracks. It happened just now when iCloud was syncing. As soon as that stopped, the pops and cracks subsided. I’m hoping this is fixed soon since I normally love this app!

Good but a couple things.. (10.1.6)
4/28/2017 8:12:13 PM 4/5 By nikeair37
GarageBand tends to suit our band’s needs. However, it is rather frustrating to receive the error message that the disk is too slow and cannot process all the data in time to playback what we’ve recorded. Normally, there’s no more than 4 or 5 tracks open. With 290+ GB of space remaining, the fastest and highest memory (500GB) MacBook Pro of its time and nothing open but GarageBand, what’s the deal? The other thing is using the built-in tempo. I would absolutely like to use it since you can incorporate tempo changes mulitple times without needing to stop recording. Often times, the click sound can be too faint to tell where you are when recording, especially for me being the drummer. I have to use another app to accurately keep time and I am unable to change the tempo as easily there like in GarageBand. I need something that has a more defined or sharper sound when the tempo track is clicking away, ONE-two-three-four. (YELLING vs. speaking) <— for example Although I’m unsure if the error message is resolvable outside of buying something extra, though I shouldn’t have to, 5 stars if the tempo click sound is given the ability to be changed or is made easier to hear the difference between ONE and four, for example.

Extremely glitchy on 2014 MacBook Pro (10.1.6)
4/27/2017 10:54:23 AM 2/5 By SlipAndSlider
Ever since MacOS Sierra, my MacBook has been using 4GB of RAM (half of what I got) at startup, which is bad enough. However, GarageBand, while only using MIDI tracks, is using 1+ GB of RAM and way too much CPU. Everything was fine about a year ago and now, I can’t even have a few MIDI tracks and a guitar track without some kind of overload warning. And to be honest, GarageBand (plus spending $1200) is one of very few applications that even keep me glued to Apple products and not wanting to wipe my hard drive for Linux and learn to use Guitarix and Ardour instead. It makes me wonder if these updates are just designed to keep people buying new Apple computers like iOS updates do with iPhones. Do programmers even bother testing on older computers anymore? If you have a system in which Apple provides updates, then the oldest supported hardware should have no or at least very few issues, especially when a person pays as much as they do for it. I’d hate to do it but if these glitches and lag continue, I’m going to have to figure out a way to downgrade my GarageBand as best case scenario, and I would really love to have El Capitain back.

Please fix the bugs! (10.1.6)
4/23/2017 11:52:00 AM 1/5 By Chris Dank
One issue i’ve ran into recently with this update is when im playing the piano in musical typing mode, i can’t play f# and g with any other notes at the same time. So if i try to play a simple F# G C chord then only the F# and G keys will play. only when i let go of the F# and G will the C play.

Needs more sounds (10.1.6)

It’s great for a while, Until you get tired of using the same instruments.

Brand new Macbook air with garage band, sound updates keep failing to download (10.1.6)
4/21/2017 12:05:21 AM 2/5 By Bretbeau
Got a new macbook air last week. Opened garage band and it asked if I wanted to update to the complete sound library. I said “yes” so it started with the 19.9 gigabyte download. At about 19.36 gigabytes into it, the program says the download for the new sounds failed. Close and reopen garage band to reinstall / download the complete news sound library. Picks up where it left off in teh download sequence, but doesn’t down load further. After a while, message pops up again and says it failed. Reinstalled / restored the original sound library. 2.1 GB download worked, and it installed. However, Garage band is still in the process of trying to download the all new sounds update. No way to stop it. Download fails to go to completion and I get the error message telling me to close the program and reopen. DEAR APPLE - PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM ASAP!!!! The main reason I upgraded my old laptop to a new one was to get the newest version of garage band. I wanted the higher functionality offered beyond the ipad app for recording. As it is, I’m not getting what I wanted and paid a small fortune to get. As expensive as your products are, I would expect that your flagship software products would work with new equipment.

Nice but 1 very weird thing is happening to me (10.1.6)
4/18/2017 4:31:01 PM 4/5 By Chabeng04
So I am trying to make music for my friend that contains a dubstep drop. I want to make my own notes. I know where to start but it will not let me write down the notes. So when i do Command + K or something it wont save the sound. But regarding that its very nice. Has nice sounds and music and many ways to make a good song! Good job on this but the first thing makes me kinda stressed watching all the tutorials about that. Noone has it but me on YT so I feel very left out.

Mixer Bug makes it almost unusable (10.1.6)
4/18/2017 10:42:54 AM 2/5 By kfiducia
It started out promising, but when you try and use their lessons feature, the old recordings and the current instrument (midi piano) get smashed into the same audio channel so you hear your previous recording over top of your current playing making it very hard to determine if you are making the same mistakes again or its the previous recording. Small bug that has been around for years that shows Apple isn't paying much attention to this product.

Utterly Useless Bollocks (10.1.6)

Bollocks. Of the utterly useless variety.

Entire Library Won’t Download (10.1.6)
4/9/2017 3:11:10 PM 1/5 By Vid Trent
It appears that everyone is having this same problem. I’ve tried everything from uninstalling to restarting my computer on several different occasions… I’m done with this for now cause it’s driving me nuts. When I see that this issue has been fixed I will come back and upgrade my rating but for now it seems like this new update is a one star update! It’s very frustrating because I just bought this MacBook Pro and I was looking forward to having fun with GarageBand but instead I waisted the entire weekend trying to figure this out. When downloading the loops it makes it to 7.79 out of 20 gigs and then it poops out, very frustrating! Please fix ASAP.

Cant Download all the Loops (10.1.6)
4/5/2017 5:49:20 PM 3/5 By MatiCardo
Hey! The App is really great, and i love it, its really easy to understand and to use. But I just don't know why, the loops library is not downloading. I just have a few sounds and thats it. It wont let me add more. At the side of every sound that i can’t download there is and spining circule. If you guys help me with this i change my rate to 5 stars! Thanks

Too many weird, unexplained, unwanted features. (10.1.6)
4/2/2017 10:53:28 AM 2/5 By Peterpopmr
While I can get manage to get some use out of this program, and while it definitely takes the cake as being one of the easiest to use music composition programs out there, there are too many bugs and weird unexplained features that nobody would ever want to use that are forced onto the user. An example of this is that one of my instruments straight up won’t play on the track when I actually take the time to play the notes for it with the musical keyboard, but when I just mash the keys and record, it all of a sudden works. It’s extremely frustrating. There are also a bunch of dials and stuff hidden in obscure locations that you can accidentally open and are hard to get off the screen. These dials usually do nothing but make the music sound worse, so I don’t know why they’re really here for this supposedly “casual” music creator. I think those who’d want to use the stupidly complicated dials would be those who purchased Logic Pro, not the basic, “your grandma can use it” Garageband. So all in all: fun to mess around with in spare time, but terrible and frustrating to use if you actually want to create something.

DISK TOO SLOW (10.1.6)
3/29/2017 9:17:19 AM 1/5 By AlexanderD10
i am using a 2015 imac with 8gb ram. Previously I was using a 2008 MacBook with only 4gb ram and HAD NO ISSUES. Now on my almost new computer that should be plenty fast, I get an error message when recording simple 4 track songs. super annoying.
