Comments and Ratings for Help Crafter

Superb product, not to much, not to little. (2.0.4)

The product has a good help section, as it should. I picked that apart, a little, just to learn. The developer is responsive. As for the application, its intuitive with very little learning curve. The developer has a trial offer, and because i was skeptical, i went for it. However,I recommend you just buy it. It took a little effort for the trial version’s cache to be purged, that was the only bummer, biggee though. The purely html option will be very useful for web based support files as well. This product brought authoring of a help system down to a manageable level, you don’t have to write your own css, html, plists, etc… With this tool It took a day to develop a help book (first draft) and add it to my application. SUCCESS!

Fails to run on macOS Sierra. (2.0.3)

Just purchased and installed off the App Store. Immediately I am unable to create any pages in the app. I constantly see crashes like "[__NSCFConstantString _getBlockStart:end:contentsEnd:forRange:stopAtLineSeparators:]: Range {2, 0} out of bounds; string length 0". The application would be wonderful if it worked, and I look forward to an update which runs on macOS Sierra so I can revisit this review. But until then I cannot in good conscience give this more than one star.

Essential Developer Tool (2.0.3)

I’ve been using Help Crafter regularly since I discovered it early this year. I regard it as a vital tool in preparing a complete macOS application; one that Apple itself appears to be unwilling to provide. I have just completed a major overhaul of my help book content and organization using 2.0.3, with no fuss, including adding a html version for posting on my web site also without fuss. That would have been impossible with any the tools I had been trying to use before Help Crafter. With every release of OS X, Apple dramatically changes their “standard” appearance and behavior for help in their own applications. Jeff can’t reasonably be expected to keep up with that sort of thing, but I am more worried about whether or not he can earn enough from developers like me to sustain his efforts on this excellent application.

The only way to go. (2.0.2)

I had tried some others in the past that I don’t think are even available today, and was dissapointed in them. HelpCrafter was a timely godsend for our sophisticated App on Mac, containing about 200 help pages. It’s a great product that will save you oddles of time in creating and producing a HelpBook and is well worth its reasonable price. We found a few minor flaws, but could work around them, and the author is working to fix those. It handles all the things you need, including anchors, keywords, abstracts, indexing, links, etc., and will produce a help bundle for inclusion in your app. It also does HTML output for the web. I highly recommend this product for anyone who needs to create a HelpBook.

Saves so much time, and developers listen to reviews (2.0.2)

The easiest way I found to quickly compose and generate Apple Help bundles. My past review concerns have been addressed in the latest version which makes me very happy with this app.

Writing help for Mac apps used to be a real pain. This tool makes it a breeze - it’s a must have development tool for all Mac developers.

Finally a real HAT for Apple Help (1.5.1)

I have tried several approaches for authoring user documentation for my amateur radio applications. Help Crafter is the latest, it is specifically designed for authoring Apple Help Books, and it Just Works. The developer responded almost instantly when I asked a few questions and reported a problem caused by my copy-pasting help content from the preview pane of my previous authoring tool. Somehow he found the problem a provided me with a work-around. Superlative support!

Nice Start for Creating Apple Helpbook (1.5.1)

Help Crafter is off to an excellent start. We’ve been waiting for years for this — it is surprising how few tools there are for authoring Apple Help. While there is room for improvement, it gets 5 stars for how responsive the developer is to feedback and for its active development. We look forward to using for years to come. An essential tool for developers.

The right tool just in time! (1.5)

I had been looking for an authoring solution for Mac help as I fnished my own application, as the two options I had found were not very satisfactory. (For the record, they were, writing it in HTML myslef, which would have taken way longer than I wanted to take, or writing it in VoodooPad and using scripts to convert it, which apparently worked at one time but broke with current tools some number of years ago.) The time had come where I had to start the writing task seriously so I looked again in the app store and hwere was this new application, Help Crafter. The first version I tried was very buggy and I had some issues with the output so I contacted the developer and he has been fantastic. He’s responded to all my emails and fixed the bugs I brought to his attention quickly and soon released the current version. It suits my needs very well now, and produces help with a nicely structured outline always available, which I like. He’s added an Export as HTML command that makes it easy to share my work in progress with readers through my website and streamlined the generation process. And the added printing support is good for proofreading. The program still feels incomplete in places. It could use find and replace. It has the menu items but they are never enabled except for Jump to selection. But I’ve used it to create an extensive help document for my application, probably better quality and in less time and at lower cost than I could have achieved otherwise, and it’s a great value for the money.
