Comments and Ratings for iThoughtsX (mindmap)

cheesy name, excellent software (4.10)
4/10/2017 1:36:36 PM 5/5 By Brokenman2
bottom line— it works great, and has the features I need for PhD work of displaying findings. Cheaper than others in this category. Key features: * Good color styles for displaying ideas that you would not be ashamed to show to colleagues. * ability to name not only what is in the “boxes” but also put labels on the lines that connect them— thus being able to describe the relationships between them. * Ease of use, low learning curve. * Ability to sync with iPad/iPhone versions. I am using this to display ideas from PhD research ($500+ research software has a mind mapping feature, but it doesn’t have the options this one has to make it look good for presentations). I have also used this for handouts of theories for students I teach. If you can get past the cheesy name of the app, this one will do what you need, and you will be up and running quickly.

Best Mind Mapping for macOS (4.9)
3/5/2017 3:55:50 AM 5/5 By schkr
Migrated from the other popular mind mapping program because I outgrew it. I needed more flexibility and control over my mind maping. - Took about an hour to get used to all the new shortcuts and differences. ˜ Does everything my other program did but better: ** Imports a slew of other files that other program didn't and plays MUCH better with OPML file format and Marked 2 ** This is huge since I use my mind maps with OmniOutliner and Marked. - Border a group of nodes - ‘floating topics’ - ‘summery links’ mutiple links from child nodes to one grandchild node. - The list goes on… - Also if you have a ForceTouchpad (new Macbook) it lets you ‘feel’ when you aligned a node just right. Complete control over every aspect of Node linking, design, placement,... Cons: The UI is not as polished and it doesn’t have that pretty Mac feel to it. Would love to have a ‘dark mode’ to match the rest of the programs in my planning and noting arsenal. Overall, the UI polishing is a VERY small sacrifice to pay for such a powerhouse of a program.

Flexible mind mapping tool (4.6)
2/8/2017 3:48:09 AM 5/5 By dkusnetzky
I've used many different mind mapping tools over the years and iThoughtsX is one of the more flexible tools. Key decision points to select this product over the others were the product's ability to import and export maps from other tools, responsive support and, of course pricing. IThoughtsX is able to import and export content from many other tools I've used in the past allowing me to finally be able to bring together maps I've created over that time. I was easily able to get to work and the tool has helped me form the structure of my next project. As an author, I map out every book, report, magazine article, and even presentations. The ability to take a map and export it to a format used by my word processor, spreadsheet or presentation software is critical. This product was available at a third of the cost of one of the other products I evaluated. Something to note is the responsive and friendly technical support. I found it difficult to find a few functions in the menu and sent the company a question. I recevied an answer within a few hours. This is remarkable considering that the response came from the UK and it was evening there when I sent the message.

Long-standing favorite (4.3)

Wayback: It does everything you need for drawing up ideas fast and efficient. Syncing, export and import and many other options make this app very flexible and powerful. Update: Nov 2016. Still one of my enduring, long-standing favorites. The developer is active, responds quickly to error reports and have added good new features without flooding the UI or demanding extensive rethinking of how the app is suppose to work. It does things well, and is incredibly simple to use and yet remains powerful and fast with good editing and export features. Good job!!!

Indispensable...but needs some work (4.1)

I find this application incredibly helpful for presenting complex ideas to others--as well as organizing my own thoughts. I can't live without it. However, the assist tools need some attention. Difficult to navigate to understand options and functionality. Some UX testing would be a step in the right direction.

The more I process version 4, the more I feel betrayed over the switch to markdown when I use richtext to its fullest. Not interested in tagging things when I write, sorry. I’ve bought this app for all my devices numerous times — and I don’t think it’s wrong to feel I deserved a heads up before this irrevecoble switch. I have hundreds of maps that had been beautiful, but are now blobs of text because “markdown doesn’t recognize blank lines” — when I updated the app, it said markdown was now supported. It did not say it was mandatory to use. This is bad business practice. I feel wronged by this direction shift.

The easiest and most powerful iThoughtsX ever (4.0)
10/26/2016 3:17:00 PM 5/5 By Sevikha
It is great to see the dev toketaWare continues to improve an already powerful information visualization tool. Now with v4, thanks to Markdown, a most common text formatting is a breeze to do, and I can spend more time on my ideas instead. Thanks!

Best of breed (3.12)

Mindmapping is an extremely useful technique for organizing thoughts. iThoughts started out life as the hands-down best mindmapping app for iOS. (And the iPad is a spectacular tool for mindmapping.) It was built with import/export support for a host of Mac mindmapping apps so you could work interchangeably between your Mac and your iDevice. Then the developer decided to bring it to the Mac platform, and he made the excellent decision to change virtually nothing from the superb iOS version. The result is the best-designed mind mapping app for the Mac, chock full of features, and at a very reasonable price. If $50 seems expensive, check out what competitors cost — mindmapping is generally aimed at businesses, and is priced that way, so $50 is actually on the low end. (Plus there are educational discounts if you ask.) I use this app all the time, and it’s stellar. I’ll give a particular shout-out to one design feature as an example: the way topic notes are handled is unique, unobtrusive, and brilliant.

Experiencing buyer’s remorse as this isn’t as polished as the reviews made me believe. Wishing I’d demo’d before purchasing.

helpful app (3.12)

iThoughtsX is an intuitive and efficient mind mapping tool. Stable, vector clean, and rearrangeable; with project mapping grace. Totally use it every day and wanted to say thanks. Worth the money. You can try it for free for two weeks on the developers website even! I have a custom fabrication and sculpture studio. Every single project is different in too many ways. Very useful and helpful app IMO.
