Comments and Ratings for Microsoft Remote Desktop

Runs great on multiple OS versions so far (8.0.37)
3/11/2017 5:20:00 AM 5/5 By nutella_98
I've used this app with Mavericks, Yosemite, and now with El Capitan, connecting to Windows 7 and 10 in a single monitor environment. Never had issues. Works great.

still running previous version (8.0.37)
3/9/2017 9:51:00 PM 1/5 By SugarloafPhoto
I rely on this software and have therefore not upgraded to this buggy version. I’m still running 8.0.36 and won’t update based on the reviews. Unfortunately Mac OS bugs me daily and I have to delay it (every day!). Why can’t we skip an update when a company like Microsoft puts out a bad update (and refuses to fix it)? I can only hope that 8.0.38 will be any better. 8.0.36 works fine for me and I really need it, so why would I upgrade based on the reviews? Once you do upgrade, there ain’t no going back either (that I know of). Or can I just keep a copy of my current .app package? I appreciate all of the honest reviewers who took the time to warn others. I do feel bad you can’t all downgrade back to a working version. Come on Microsoft!! For Crying Out Loud!! Either revert or fix, but don’t leave a bad update up for this long!

Typical buggy Microsoft experience (8.0.37)
2/27/2017 10:41:00 PM 2/5 By Ghostnmac
Works… sometimes. Can Microsoft make anything reliable? Based on my experience, no.

Funny; very highly downloaded and used, but a lot of gripes. (8.0.37)
2/25/2017 11:17:00 AM 5/5 By JannyMan
Why so many gripes for a simple piece of freeware that does what it says it does? I’ve been using MS Remote Desktop for over 5 years and have no issues. Used with several different VPNs and three different PCs, three different Windows OS versions (7, 8, 10) and at least four different versions of OSX. I use it now to connect to my Surface Pro 4 at work; no need to bring the laptop home when the RDP works so seamlessly.

Full Sreen Not Working Right (8.0.37)
2/24/2017 6:07:00 AM 1/5 By Quiet Stranger
The new version does not do full screen on a secondary monitor. When I have the app on the second screen and open a connection, it goes full screen on the laptop screen and not the second screen. PLEASE FIX!!

Downloading Intituit S/W for Mac (8.0.37)
2/17/2017 10:04:00 AM 5/5 By 48anon
Helpdesk technician (Josh) was knowledgeable and very helpful with downloading the Quickbooks S/W program (a MS Window’s product) for Mac. Josh was also patient and used knid words when I goofed. Thanks

Please get a fix out for the bug with the drive/clipboard syncing dialog (8.0.37)
2/16/2017 5:45:00 AM 2/5 By dragon3434
This is SUPER annoying. It’s been weeks, get a fix out already. If I say dont’ show again for this desktop, I mean it.

No more Virtual Machine / Parallels (8.0.37)
2/15/2017 5:34:00 AM 5/5 By Sukhi.jmtc
I love this app, it has really changed my life. Setup was not too bad with the help of my IT department. Now i can connect to my work computer from home (in seconds) on my macbook pro and it performs 10x better than my Virtual Machine ever did. The best part is my macbook pro is not being abused, as this app is very lightweight. Microsoft you have done an excellent job on this app, never stop improving it i beg you. THIS IS THE MOST ESSENTIAL APP ON MY MACBOOK PRO

Runs very fast, one minor complaint (8.0.37)
2/10/2017 8:05:00 PM 5/5 By Frank Lea
Loaded latest version this evening. My remote runs super fast now, everything works. Love how it allows my Mac to run my windows remote work computer. Only issue I see is that Excel colors may be off. Specifically, the yellow fill color in cells is drab—much closer to beige than yellow. that isn’t bad for free, but I hope Microsoft notices this and can fix it.

Folder redirection broke with this update. (8.0.37)
2/9/2017 8:54:00 PM 1/5 By one_review
Folder redirection is broken. Every time I open the app, I have to re-enable folder redirection, and it still doesn’t work. Also, every time I open the app a pop-up shows up, even if I click “don’t show this again”. Finally, when I start a connection, the screen goes black and I have to choose to show the connection window from a menu.

Most recent update doesn’t work... (8.0.37)
2/2/2017 5:16:00 AM 1/5 By M3K1
The latest update causes my system to constantly freeze up. I am unable to use this app in its current state and used to rely on it for work.

Please keep up the good work (8.0.37)
1/26/2017 9:32:00 AM 5/5 By ATS2007
Things aren’t always perfect, but it is by far my least troublesome Microsoft product. Please keep working on this and updating it. It is a huge part of my day, and I’m grateful that you put in this much effort. Thank you!

The new version broke the ability to restore full screen for multiple monitors down to a window. (8.0.37)
1/26/2017 8:03:00 AM 1/5 By Dontwannamakeanickname
Running multiple monitors, I cannot use the restore button to windowize the RDP session so I can do work on my mac while still connected to the remote desktop. The first screen windowizes, but the other two screens stay full screen and there is not an easy way to get back to the Mac desktop. The other screen or screens of the RDP session cover the Mac desktop. Please fix. This is annoying. The previous version worked fine. Why the heck did you have to mess with what was working well? Stupid Microsoft.

Do not update (8.0.37)
1/25/2017 1:13:00 PM 1/5 By what? for real?
Latest update is super buggy. Seriously weird stuff with the windows opening that would take more than 6000 characters and any normal person attention span to explain (some other reviews mentioned a similar problem but what I am experiencing is weirder). But the biggest issue is I used to use this to download a lot of report, now it can no longer find my computer’s hard drive.

Don’t like the new permissions dialog (8.0.37)
1/24/2017 5:25:00 PM 3/5 By KangarooBox
I’m constantly attaching to new and different Windows instances in AWS and the new security dialog box prompts me every single time. Since these instances are always different there is no way to turn off this prompt and it (along with self-signed cert prompt) means I have to click OK several times in order to connect. Please make these options opt-out.

SLOW……. (8.0.37)
1/23/2017 1:46:00 PM 1/5 By Tlitterio
Ever since I upgraded to this version, both Windows 10 computers I remote to are extremely laggy...

Useless with latest update (8.0.37)
1/23/2017 1:30:00 PM 1/5 By qrayg
Every time I launch the app the What's new Window shows even though I have the "never show this again" box checked. The biggest problem however is that all of my saved desktops are now gone and every time I need to RDP into a server I need to re-add all my desktops all over again. It's infuriating. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it keep happening. I tried to look for other RDP solutions but there are none for OS X to connect to Windows servers. I can't do my job now.

They broke more things than they fixed. (8.0.37)
1/22/2017 9:34:00 AM 2/5 By KonnMan
The latest update of the app will now open RDP sessions way off center on the screen, you then have to drag the session back up so you can use it. More generally, somehow they still can’t get a multi tabbed interface on this like most other RDP solutions. And like other reviews mentioned, you still can’t put connections in folders. Also, integration with Windows 10 DPI settings is non-existent. Windows 10 leaves the DPI choice up to the connecting client settings, which only seems to work from a windows 10 client. So of course, from the Mac they leave it as default, with no ability to change it. The result is a super tiny user experience if using higher resolutions. The only workaround is to use lower resolutions, which makes things look crappy, or keep using windows 7 for your hosts.

It works good, but tired of the frequent updates... (8.0.37)
1/21/2017 5:02:00 PM 4/5 By Tenn Tux
Microsoft Remote Desktop works good but I get tired of the frequent updates. Half of the time when my Mac announces there are software updates available, it’s Microsoft Remote Desktop. But then, it's a Microsoft product. Their engineer’s bonuses must be based on how many releases they generate. It doesn’t stop work but it is annoying.

Good but needs work (8.0.37)
1/21/2017 11:45:00 AM 3/5 By TGC RaNciD
This is was a great program until this last update caused the application to fail when closing from multi window to a single window. there are times i need it to connect to multple servers and this has made it impossible, when this is fixed it will be perfect.

Last update messed it all up (8.0.37)
1/20/2017 8:14:00 AM 2/5 By Tall Man 2825
Since the last update of version 8.0.37 the program constantly freezes up when trying to connect to the RDP, or doesn’t disconnect completely leaving a black screen. I have to completely disconnect and restart the app. Completely annoying since I connect to multiple RDP at once. This app was the greatest, now it has lost my vote.

New version looks like MS-DOS (8.0.37)
1/20/2017 6:19:00 AM 2/5 By LK3607
I wish I had shut off the automatic updates. Terrible quality.

Window opens off center on my MBP (8.0.37)
1/18/2017 8:20:00 PM 2/5 By simon_lefisch
Like the title reads, when I open a connection the window opens off-center on my screen. Never did this before until this recent update. Also, the fact that you still can’t group connections into folders is ridiculous. This is a basic feature that shoudve been added a lont time ago. C’mon Microsoft, how hard is it add this? Otherwise, it works. Just annoying that I have to move the window to center every time I open a connection.

8.0.37 - buggy (8.0.37)
1/18/2017 3:57:00 PM 1/5 By Fiddler Steve
Seems like the new resolution options in 8.0.37 are causing problems with my existing connections. Have spent a couple hours trying to debug connections to remote PCs that either aren’t displaying correctly or will only display at much lower resolutions than in the previous version. I have been happy with this product over the last year or so of using it; sorry this latest version is messed up...

I didn’t expect much but I’m completely blown away (8.0.37)
1/17/2017 11:25:00 PM 5/5 By Lianlianlianlian
What a great product! Integrates well with the macOS env, trackpad, gestures, full screen mode, etc. Didn’t think the mac version of remote desktop would be this good. I used it to connect to a Windows Server 2012 instance in Azure and it’s absolutely perfect. Feels like running a local VM via Parallels.

It works for RDP access to windows systems. (8.0.37)
1/17/2017 5:45:00 PM 3/5 By kmiljour
I am a Linux System Admin that now manages the companys windows systems. This app works really well with some small issues that can eaisly be worked around. The biggest thing holding this app from getting 4 or 5 stars is the lack of ability to group like systems. We have servers and desktops spread accross 5 different locations it would be nice to be able to group locations and like systems..

This broke my version (8.0.36)
1/14/2017 6:18:00 PM 1/5 By BigToeSmallFoot
Everything was working fine until itunes suggested I update to the latest version. Now I can’t connect to anything. Now I have to figure out how to install the older version.

Works Fine For Me! (8.0.36)
1/14/2017 6:02:00 PM 5/5 By Dr33z
Before i downloaded this App i always read reviews to see if i should even bother or not, I read reviews and decided to try it and i love this App, as a Systems Admin for a smaller company i only have a few servers i constantly log into and Domain Controllers, etc. etc. This app most certainly gets the job done and even more importantly it just works, Its nice to have something like this app so i dont have to hop on another computer or run a VM, Anyway i am very pleased with this app and it does exactly what i need it to do! Hope this helps someone ;)

Needs to be more robust (8.0.36)
12/28/2016 4:34:00 PM 2/5 By Nathan Nebelsick
This works great for remoting into servers and computers, but I would really like drag and drop files, copy and paste files between mac and windows.

It works but so cumbersome (8.0.36)
12/25/2016 5:15:00 PM 2/5 By OtherTraveller
Yes, it works, but that’s it. Cannot believe this is from Microsoft. The RDP team really need some learning. 1. Today most of remote desktop solution allow your to resize desktop resolution on fly when you resize client window. But this MS native tool doesn't. 2. I need to access a lot of servers with same domain user name and password, when password updates, I had to change them one by one, what a horrible customer experience!
