With more than 200 new features, OS X Mavericks brings Maps and iBooks to the Mac, introduces Finder Tabs and Tags, enhances multidisplay support, and includes an all-new version of Safari. The latest release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system also adds new core technologies that deliver breakthrough power efficiency and responsiveness.

• Download and read books from the iBooks Store.
• Pick up right where you left off. iCloud keeps your current page up to date across all your devices.
• Swipe through Multi-Touch books with interactive features, diagrams, photos, videos, and more.
• Keep multiple books open while using other apps — great for writing a paper or doing research.

• Send directions from your Mac to your iPhone and use voice navigation when you’re on the go.
• Explore select cities in stunning, photo-realistic 3D with Flyover.
• See detailed directions, real-time traffic, and alternate routes.
• Find restaurants, stores, and other places of interest with local search in Maps.

• Create new events in a snap with the new, streamlined event inspector.
• Enter event locations fast with address autocompletion.
• Add walking or driving travel time to your event so you know when to leave.
• See a map of your event’s location, as well as the weather forecast for that day.
• See holidays and Facebook events in Calendar.

• Use Shared Links to discover new, interesting links posted by people you follow on Twitter and LinkedIn.
• Browse longer thanks to new core technologies that boost energy efficiency.
• Easily access your bookmarks, Reading List, and Shared Links in the new Sidebar.
• Protect your online privacy with new tracking-prevention features.

iCloud Keychain
• Don’t worry about remembering passwords — iCloud Keychain fills them in so you don’t have to.
• Keep your website passwords, credit card numbers, and Wi-Fi passwords up to date across your trusted devices. Robust 256-bit AES encryption helps keep your information safe.
• Sign in once to all of your mail, contacts, calendar, and other internet accounts, and iCloud pushes them to all your Mac computers.

Multiple Displays
• Just plug in a second display to use it with your Mac — no configuration required.
• Access the Dock and the menu bars on each display.
• Use full-screen apps on any or all of your displays.
• Use your HDTV as a second display with Apple TV.

• Reply to mail or messages right from a notification, without having to leave the app you’re using.
• Receive notifications for incoming FaceTime calls and reply with an iMessage or set a callback reminder.
• Receive notifications from websites, even when Safari isn’t running.

Finder Tabs
• Declutter your desktop by consolidating multiple Finder windows into one.
• Move files between your tabs by simply dragging and dropping them.
• Select a custom view — icon, list, or column — for each of your tabs.
• Use tabs with full-screen Finder to organize and access all your files and folders.

• Organize files with tags no matter where they’re located — in iCloud or on your Mac.
• Give a document as many tags as you want.
• Click a tag in the Finder sidebar to see all the files with that tag.

Advanced Technologies
• With energy-saving core technologies in OS X Mavericks, you can surf the web longer on a single charge.
• Watching iTunes HD video is now more efficient, so you can watch more video when you’re not plugged in.
• App Nap regulates applications you’re not using so they consume less energy.

iCloud Keychain on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch requires iOS 7.0.3.

Multiple Display with Apple TV and an HDTV works with Apple TV (2nd generation or newer), iMac (mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Pro (early 2011 or newer), and Mac Pro (late 2013).

Some features require an Apple ID and/or compatible Internet access; additional fees and terms apply.

Comments and Ratings for OS X Mavericks

finally bit the bullet (10.9.4)
8/19/2014 5:03:00 AM 5/5 By KingKai7o2
I’ve been histant with updating my OS to mavericks after reading all the negative reviews. After buying a new Nikon d610 i was quick to realize that the older OS don’t recognize the new RAW files making it impossible to upload them to Lightroom 4. After surfing the interwebs, I found out that OS X Mavericks recognized the RAW files from the d610. Download and install time took less than 2 hours, which surprised me. Haven’t had any issues with the new OS as most people have ran into. All in all, i only downloaded this OS to work with my new camera, but i am quite impressed with it so far.

ok so far (10.9.4)

i just downloaded and installed and it took about 45 minutes from beginning to completion.now let me state that i just got my MBP back from apple store to replace a hard drive so my mbp was clean of all garbage and like new and i wanted to take a chance and see what happens and i like the way it looks and i guess time will tell…but the install process for me was a complete breeze!!!!!!

Update went very smoothly. It took about 3 hours to download, install, and restart. The only problem I am noticing is my battery drains very fast now!!

Done (10.9.4)

What I need is a stable Mac…don’t take away with an update, and for God’s sake (respectfully and charity) respond to your “fans” with something..nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin. No more remote video? does this mean that the “fake thunderbolt” plug on my late 2010 MBP was a dupe all along? Can you let us suckers know what else you plan to wreck? At $2000/a pop, I’m all outta love!

Delay in Time When System is Put to Sleep (10.9.4)
8/17/2014 10:06:00 PM 3/5 By Jess_Elizondo
Everything about OS X Mavericks is great, except that the system hangs for a long time when set to sleep. Usually when I would close my laptop’s lid, the Macbook would go to sleep within 2 seconds. Now it takes almost 30 seconds to sleep after upgrading to Mavericks. This could be an issue because I don’t feel comfortable closing my laptop and packing it in my bag while the system is still running.

The worst thing I’ve experienced from a mac (10.9.4)

Rainbow pinwheel is now a regular thing. Programs stopped working. The ones that work, work slower. F4 dashboard froze my computer. I am ashamed of apple for putting this out. Extremely disappointed. Extremely. I wish I could rank this lower.

Worked well for me, but problem with Gmail (10.9.4)
8/16/2014 8:43:00 PM 4/5 By Fr. GeorgeMac
I installed Mavericks as a clean install instead of an upgrade. Using Dropbox, Office 365, Adobe Cloud, etc. made recovery of files and applications a snap. May not be as feasible for others. My 21" iMac runs well on Mavericks. It runs faster with fewer rainbow circles, but that may have as much to do with the clean install as it does with the upgraded OS. So far all of my apps including Office and Adobe Creative Suite run just fine. However, we use Google Apps for family email, etc, and gmail does not work with the new Apple mail program. Apple is aware of the problem, and I'd expect there will be a fix soon, but as of 10.9.4 it has not been fixed.

Mavericks has made my computer run faster on all levels (10.9.4)

This is a beautiful OS , love it !!!! . You deffinately need 8 gigs of ram though , then you’ll have a little ram left over for other apps Update : After using Mavericks 10.9 for almost a month I have come to the conclusion that my battery holds a charge longer ( About 6 hrs. ) and it’s a little over four years old . My computer also manages the ram much better than it used to , I have had absolutely no crashes and it runs much faster than before . Overall I am also very happy with the 10.9.1 update , Thank you very much Apple for restoring my computer to work like new !!!!!! Update :” Safari" is much slower than " Firefox 26.0 “ which is my default browser , Safari is a secure browser and I like it but everything loads so slow . 1/17/14 update : Overall still pretty good but there are weaknesses which I have noticed , such as weak or almost non existent message updates ( Get about 1/2 of them from Facebook ) . I have slow startup times compared to Snow Leopard . Page to page swiping in finder dosn’t work . Zooming was 1000 % better with Snow Leopard ( Zoom is non existent on my desktop ) Really the only place zoom works is in Safari , I have two finger tapping , and two finger pinch and expand enabled but these only work in Safari with my trackpad . 2/25/14 update : Really ???? A security flaw for hackers to take advantage and it was there for month’s !!!!! Shame on Apple !!!!! Steve is rolling over in his grave I am very sure !!!!! I am also very sure this commentary will never be posted !!! I pretty much knew that " NO ONE “ could fill Steve Jobs shoes and this is proof in a nutshell !!!! I no longer trust apple to be working diligently for the peoples security !!!!!! update 4/4/14 : Safari uses a lot of ram Update : ram sucker , glad I upgraded to 8 gig ( 4 gig’s not enough ) update 7/3/14 : Ok some of the bug are getting worked out finally Those are the changes I’ve noticed , I just hope cupertino does a better job with Yosemite ." Give me back the zoom control trackpad two finger pinch and expand for everything not just safari "

So far so good (10.9.4)

I waited a long time to upgrade because of the terrible reviews I’ve read from other users about their computers crashing or the long download/install times. I was nervous, but I backed up the hard drive then went ahead and clicked upgrade. The whole process took maybe 1 1/2 to 2 hours (downloading and installing). No issues so far. I decided not to try the download over wireless and hooked it up directly to the router. It only took about 20-30 minutes to download, where as I’ve seen people saying it took them up to 4+ hours to just download the thing… So hooking your computer up to a router may be helpful? Also, my desktop is fairly new, so that may be contributing to the relative ease of upgrading. I’m extremely hesitant to try it on my laptop, as it is much older and slower.

Nothing works (10.9.4)

Since this update, so many problems - Trouble connecting to internet, Adobe doesn’t work any more (even with update), my Office Mac will not accept previous product key. PROBLEMS, PROBLEMS, PROBLEMS, regret updating, never had a single problem the 4 previous years.
