The Unarchiver is a small and easy to use program that can unarchive many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR (including v5), 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It will also open many older formats, such as StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It will even open other kinds of files, like ISO and BIN disc images, some Windows .EXE installers. The list is actually much longer - see the program homepage for the full list.

The Unarchiver also tries to detect and correctly handle the filename encoding in the archives it opens, allowing you to open files from every part of the world without getting garbled filenames.

The Unarchiver aims to be the only unarchiving program you will ever need, and to stay out of your way.

However, if you want to browse the contents of archives, or if you want to support development of The Unarchiver, look for "The Archive Browser" on the Mac App Store, or go to! It lets you browse and preview archive contents, and find out information about archives!

Also, if you need to open archives on your iPad or iPhone, look for "Archives" on the App Store, or go to It is based on The Unarchiver, and lets you easily handle Archives on iOS!

Great app! I use it all the time. Simple and effective.

able to select multiple files to extract in a row (3.11.1)
11/27/2016 2:23:00 PM 5/5 By SirBlinky87
Finally an extracter that i can select multiple files and press extract and they all extract with out me having to wait for each one to be extracted. It will also delete the original compressed file so i dont have to go back and find all the files ive already extracted.

i can’t seem to delete this review. (3.11.1)

Doesn’t work in latest OSX version. Can’t get past the greyed out instructional screen in Preferences Screen. Fix this defect.

it seems like this app has still no competitors, an essential tool

i just can say it is the best unarchiver ever.

not fully functional (3.11.1)
10/11/2016 11:01:00 PM 2/5 By ^Vlad^
Does not handle multi file rar archives. Sadly I’ve been using this tool for several years, and I was sure it could handle anything. Its not a limitation of free version, I own the paid one(browser) , it seem the author just didn’t do good job here. There is free apps can do better than this, deleted it.

Works perfectly (3.11.1)
9/22/2016 8:36:00 AM 5/5 By johnny.deathmatch
Like it says, I’ve been using this app for years (since 2012), and it works perfectly. Thank you so much!

Most simple, but the fastest (3.11.1)
9/9/2016 5:35:00 AM 5/5 By Dikkie Black
Unarchiver is the fastest program in it’s class. I tried out the others and they seem to run into issues with multiple zip files. I manage multiple zip files all the time becasuse on some image sites it is easier to uplad as a zip file than a group of file individually. Other programs create unwanted popups, are slow, and as stated before they cannot extract multiple zip files. Been using this program since I got my first iMac years ago.

Awesome... (3.11.1)

I rarely use any software that didn’t come with macOS if I don’t have to. But, in this case, an old ZIP file was deemed corrupted by the Archive Utility and would not unzip. I even triend PKZIP for Windows (an old friend that will “Fix” corrupt ZIP files). It was unable to save my files inside this zip file. I got Unarchiver and it did the job. All of the compressed files in my ZIP file were unzipped and are working just fine. That impressed me right there. PKZIP is a stalwart of the Windows ecosystem. I used it for years in my professional jobs and never did it fail me like it did today. I thought all hope was lost and then I used your application and it did the job. Excellent application. I don’t need or want Stuffit Expander or need to use the Archive Utility now that Unarchiver is on my machine. Two Thumbs Up!

All you need (3.11.1)

Not the best looking app but it does the job.

Worked when Archive Utility didn't (3.11.1)
8/9/2016 7:53:00 PM 5/5 By konkrypton
I was downloading a zip file with a Mac app in it. Using Archive Utility, the app wouldn’t run after unzipping. Unarchiver unzipped it correctly and the app worked as it was supposed to. Good job, Unarchiver!

Supports different encoding (3.11.1)
7/14/2016 9:02:00 PM 5/5 By shs10978
What I always like about this unarchiver app is that it supports a lot of encodings and it will let me decide which one is the best, so I always get my file names correct. No weird symbols. Very satisfied.

Great app (3.11.1)
6/27/2016 9:55:00 AM 5/5 By Melissa Neverman
Always works great..Its not winrar but its the best extracter available to osx hands down. Highly recommended.

Very Good! (3.11.1)
6/25/2016 12:58:00 PM 5/5 By Sony12345jlkjgb
I have been using this tool for several years. It does what we need without any frills. As a developer, we often need to extract jars, and this was by far the simplest and easiest to use. I regularly use this for jars, tars, zips and so far no problems. A great tool for free, I would recommend it to anyone.

ZipNOTHING! (3.11.1)
6/12/2016 10:56:00 PM 1/5 By FoolishQueen
The program couldn’t extract bin or cpgz files. It just created another copy of the extact file that’s being extracted…

Used to work great now works once every 50 times (3.11.1)
6/12/2016 5:07:00 AM 2/5 By Walk3r-919
For some reason the program mysteriously started asking to be default application for unarchiving. It already was, I tried making it again and nothing changed. Support website is a mess, not very good UX. Support page for like 5 different applications. Every once and a while it will work perfectly as expected but its very rare these days. Would appreciate a fix.

Best on Mac for XZ (3.11.1)

Works great, love it.

So SLOW! (3.11.1)
5/20/2016 10:04:00 PM 2/5 By JBoDEAN96
Man, this is so slow! I used other apps on my mac that were so much faster at extracting files than this. Just amazed with such high rating, given how horribly slow it is!

This latest update has broken it! (3.11)
5/19/2016 10:10:00 PM 3/5 By dantellocy
Like others, after this latest update, I’m always getting a message that one of the archives is unreadable. But they’re fine as WINRAR can open them no problem and the version right before this update can as well. Please fix or undo this last update Version 3.11 (107). To be fair, this was a 5 star application, and if fixed, will still be a 5 star app.

A problem (3.11)
5/19/2016 9:46:00 AM 3/5 By Sad787
After the update, I keep getting “there was a problem while reading the contents of the file…the archive file is incomplete” to all my archive files. Even the ones that were good on the pervious version. It also does not que, is it gives me a “null” error. I hope you find a fix for this and thank you for all your hard work.

Garbage (3.11)
5/18/2016 9:04:00 PM 1/5 By arkhanjel
Didn’t work. It wouldn’t open zip files and for the .cgpz files it claims to be able to open all it did was stick the zip file in a folder.

Perfect record (3.11)
5/18/2016 9:03:00 PM 5/5 By Easy Being
Author keeps updating, and this app has never failed me. I use it a lot. Well done.

Best of Best (3.11)

Works Great (3.10.1)
5/10/2016 4:42:00 PM 5/5 By JoelCo
Its a little confusing at first, but once you get it to work its amazing. I downloaded Wikipedia in the form of a 12-ish GB .bz2 file, and this is the only thing I’ve found that can handle it. Great app.

Yay! this finally worked (3.10.1)
5/4/2016 8:44:00 PM 5/5 By ICryAnimating
I just spent a good hour trying to get a final animation .mov from the windows side of my computer to play on the mac (I have bootcamp). For some reason the .mov file was 4 GB despite being 1.5 minutes long. All the programs meant to help were crashing… then finally this actually worked!!! yay the light poured down from the heavens and gav me my .mov on the mac side!! Now I don’t have to fail animation!!

Great tool for expanding all kinds of files! (3.10.1)
4/24/2016 2:37:00 PM 5/5 By PeteT1975
The tool which comes with OS X often does the wrong thing, etc. The Unarchiver always works. Not much more to say: 8MB on your drive, well worth it!
